This week's edition refers to South African Municipal Workers’ Union v Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Another (334/23) [2025] ZACC 4 (9 April 2025), a judgment confirming the order of the Labour Court declaring the inclusion of the phrase “staff member” in section 71B of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000 unconstitutional and invalid.
Also included are references to six recent Supreme Court of Appeal judgments, including Minister of Environmental Affairs v Trustees for the Time Being of GroundWork Trust and Others (549/2023) [2025] ZASCA 43 (11 April 2025) which relates to the enforcement and implementation of the Highveld Priority Area Air Quality Management Plan.
Highlights from the Government Gazette notices referred to in this edition include the Discussion Document on the Review of the White Paper on Local Government, the Draft Strategy relating to the Design of Product Life Cycle, Re-Use, Controls, and Disposal of Absorbent Hygienic Products, and withdrawal of the Regulations relating to the Prohibition of the Sale, Importation, and Manufacture of Foodstuffs containing any part of the Plant or Component derived from the genus Cannabis Sativa L, Hemp, Hemp Seed Oil, or Hemp Seed Flour, originally published on 20 March 2025.
